Hyenas, an upcoming multiplayer shooter from developer Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA, has just released a new trailer featuring a first look at their upcoming map We Took Manhattan. Hyenas has no release date confirmed yet, but We Took Manhattan will be available for alpha PC players on January 20th, at 12 PM eastern time. Here’s the new walkthrough of Hyena’s sci-fi map:
Hyenas has promised some very interesting mechanics throughout its trailers, which often included an oddball sense of humor that should fit the genre well. FPS games generally need a fresh hook to distinguish themselves from the countless other multiplayer shooters, and Hyenas’ sci-fi environments have more freedom than usual. So, it’s nice to see some of the key areas the devs could cook up.
Lines of sight are crucial in any shooter, in order to keep the pacing and strategy of the game balanced. Today’s trailer does show off some playful twists on traditional map design. The residential feeling sometimes looks a little flat, despite its verticality. But there are still plenty of obstacles and pop culture distractions to help define Hyenas as an example of controlled chaos.
It remains to be seen if the map flows, but so far, today’s footage is a good sign. The subway area is a particular highlight, and it’s no wonder that closed the trailer. The odd angles will grant lots of opportunities for unexpected movement and tactics. It’s a shame the devs didn’t lean into that wacky approach a little more, since they seem to excel at it.
However, that does mean it’s going to be a little more flexible for the pro players. Hyenas looks just competitive enough to build its own eSports scene, which would be a delight.
