Collaborations with celebrities and hit entertainment IPs have proven to be great for live-service games so far, with Overwatch 2 inches into the water. These new avenues for the live-service sequel and a teaser made with the help of a certain professional wrestler led many to believe that John Cena would be added to Overwatch in some capacity, however, this turned out to be false.

According to reporting from Polygon, John Cena’s only involvement with Overwatch 2 up to this point was his teasing of the upcoming new chapter, Invasion. This will introduce a new PvE event, but players won’t see Cena in the game or hear him as a voice actor, as the actor was allegedly only involved as far as teasing the event. The most recent content trailer only shows existing heroes and their voices.

The Invasion update for Overwatch 2 will serve as a chapter in the adaptation of PvE that Blizzard announced it would be doing in lieu of the previously dedicated mode. Instead, there will likely be limited-time events like this that allow Blizzard to show off the capabilities of its developers in new ways while also making sure to provide players with story content like previously promised.

Unfortunately, John Cena will not be a part of this addition to the game, although it doesn’t mean that Blizzard has ruled it out for the future.
