Streamers have never been more popular and sometimes they enjoy capitalizing off of that fame with in-person events to get to know their audiences. However, these often have security, are planned ahead of time, and usually don’t involve the streamer getting arrested, unlike what happened to Kai Cenat in New York today during a public PlayStation 5 giveaway.
Like previous events, Kai Cenat was planning to host the event in person at a pre-determined location without the typical safeguards a convention might afford personalities. The large gathering of teens and young adults became rowdy, with videos captured by local news organizations spreading the news on Twitter. Now, Cenat has been arrested due to the public disturbance that has been alleged to be considered a riot.
The videos of the crowds show large groups of people gathering together and throwing objects at the police officers in front of the store in the video above. Due to these videos from local news stations, this news of Kai Cenat’s arrest has spread outside of regular streamer circles and will likely continue to do so as things calm down around Union Square.
A video featuring an officer giving a briefing states that the department intends to discuss the possible charge of “inciting a riot,” referring to Cenat gathering the crowd and allegedly inciting this behavior. Under New York law, a person incites a riot “when he or she urges ten or more persons to engage in tumultuous and violent conduct of a kind likely to create public alarm.”
This story is still very early in development and more news will likely come out about how New York is moving forward legally amid the fallout of Kai Cenat’s event in Union Square.
