The Sonic the Hedgehog TV spinoff, Knuckles, is amassing a stellar ensemble as Paramount+ and Sega cast Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel. This news has been confirmed by Deadline, adding these notable actors to the series alongside the previously confirmed Idris Elba, reprising his role of Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
In April 2023, John Whittington, co-writer of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was announced as the series developer and head writer. Whittington, along with Elba and Sonic film franchise creatives Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, Jeff Fowler, and Toru Nakahara, will serve as executive producers. Paramount Pictures and Sega are the primary production companies for the series. According to reports, the narrative will follow Knuckles as he mentors Wade Wipple, a character played by the returning Adam Pally.
The series will also feature recurring roles from Edi Patterson, Julian Barratt, Scott Mescudi, and Ellie Taylor. Guest stars include Rory McCann and Tika Sumpter, who will reprise her role as Maddie.
The writing stage of the series was well underway by April, with Whittington collaborating with Brian Schacter and James Madejski. The plot is positioned between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3, slated for 2024, and promises to lay the groundwork for the latter through easter eggs.
Production of the series kicked off in April 2023 in London, England. Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler helmed the pilot, with Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker contributing as directors. Trost, in addition to his directorial role, took on the cinematography for the pilot, a task he had performed for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Filming locations encompassed diverse settings, including Pinewood Studios, Black Park, Slough, and an undisclosed industrial estate in Aylesbury. As of early June, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) had completed his scenes.
Knuckles is scheduled for a 2023 release on Paramount+.
