A remake of the iconic video game Chrono Trigger may be in the pipeline, according to claims from a well-known Nintendo leaker. Zippo, the leaker, states that Square Enix is currently working on a “full remake” of the game in HD-2D, similar to the ongoing Dragon Quest 3 project.

Originally launched on the Super Nintendo in 1995, Chrono Trigger garnered positive reviews and was later adapted for various platforms, such as PlayStation 1, Nintendo DS, mobile devices, and PC. Square Enix has yet to make the original Chrono Trigger available on more modern platforms like Nintendo Switch, PS5, or Xbox Series.

At present, Zippo’s information only suggests that the rumored Chrono Trigger remake is slated for the Nintendo Switch, leaving the availability on other platforms uncertain. If Square Enix is indeed working on a comprehensive remake of Chrono Trigger, it may seem surprising to limit its release to the Nintendo Switch. However, there’s a possibility that the game could initially be a timed-Switch exclusive, akin to Octopath Traveler, granted the remake is in development.

In the same post hinting at the Chrono Trigger remake, Zippo also mentioned the potential airing of a Nintendo Direct in approximately 48 hours (which has since been confirmed). This does give credence to the leak, although it still doesn’t absolutely confirm the speculation.

The Nintendo Direct starts on June 21 at 7:00 a.m. PT featuring roughly 40 minutes of information focused mainly on Nintendo Switch titles launching this year, including new details on Pikmin 4.
