Legendary Entertainment has recently acquired the film and TV rights to the classic beat-em-up game Street Fighter, according to Hollywood Reporter. The studio is set to collaborate with video game company Capcom on future projects based on the popular franchise.
Legendary Entertainment, is an American film production and mass media company based in Burbank, California. Founded in 2000 by Thomas Tull, Scott Mednick, and William Fay, Legendary has worked with major studios such as Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Paramount Pictures, as well as streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. They produced such popular films as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and Dune.
The Street Fighter franchise, developed and published by Capcom, is a Japanese media franchise centered around a series of fighting video and arcade games. The first game was released in 1987 and has since spawned six main series games, various spin-offs, and crossovers, as well as numerous appearances in other media. The best-selling 1991 release, Street Fighter II, established many of the conventions of the one-on-one fighting genre.
As one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time, Street Fighter has sold 49 million units worldwide as of September 2022, making it the highest-grossing fighting game media franchise at $12.2 billion, including 500,000 arcade unit sales. The Street Fighter franchise is no stranger to films, with a 1994 action film based on the game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Directed by Steven E. de Souza, the film, featured performances by Raul Julia, Byron Mann, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, and Wes Studi. The movie loosely followed the plot of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and focused on Colonel Guile (Van Damme) and his efforts to bring down General M. Bison (Julia).
