LEGO 2K Drive, the LEGO-themed open world racing game from 2K Games, has released another trailer featuring a variety of challenges that go beyond outright racing. There were also a couple of new power-ups for the track, including a defensive energy bubble.
LEGO 2K Drive launches on May 19th, 2023, and fans can pre-order now. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch the latest “Awesome News Network” trailer on the LEGO 2K HUB YouTube channel:
LEGO 2K Drive has been consistently releasing new teasers on nearly a weekly basis, since it was first revealed back in March. This was some unexpected pacing, but it turns out the game might actually be expansive enough to support that until the game launches next month.
Each trailer, playfully presented as “ANN” broadcasts, has featured a completely different aspect of the game, but today’s revealed challenges are particularly interesting.
They could easily determine if the game’s open world feels active enough without losing focus and getting bogged down. Also, LEGO 2K Drive needs to distinguish itself from competitors without coming off as an IP cash grab.
Fortunately, there seem to be more than enough unique challenges that balance the charm and appeal of LEGO with classic racing tropes.
Many challenges are appropriately silly, like rolling eggs around to make breakfast, and even a glimpse of the children’s game “red light, green light”. The challenges are also frequently inspired by their biome, resulting in an equally distinguishable creativity.
However, whacky gameplay is sort of expected from a LEGO game. So, the real surprises included target practice, dodging mines, and rescuing civilians from horror icons with Crazy Taxi-style chaos. The devs have done a good job of connecting over-the-top, open world activities with familiar racing skills.
