LEGO 2K Drive, the new racing, exploration and LEGO building game from Visual Concepts and 2K Games, has released a new trailer for the Season 1 Drive Pass. The trailer showcases a variety of free and premium rewards, challenges, vehicles and more. The Drive Pass is slated to release later this week on June 28th, 2023.
LEGO 2K Drive is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch today’s trailer for the new Drive Pass on the LEGO 2K Hub YouTube channel:
LEGO 2K Drive has been very controversial as a result of in-game purchases. Consequently, anything involving a season pass isn’t going to win over concerned parents and casual players. Microtransactions were the core drawback in our full review of LEGO 2K Drive, and widely accepted as questionable, particularly in a LEGO-themed game.
Today’s trailer really emphasizes the 1970 Dodge Charger. This blatantly references Fast and Furious, which remains immensely popular among younger viewers in spite of some divisive recent entries. The Charger just so happens to be stuck behind the Premium paywall. The emphasis on Premium rewards is astonishing, and generally reserved for freemium games that rely on that.
However, the new challenges will be free, and Perilous Platforms looks like a legitimately fun time. It offers a new way to enjoy verticality and continues to lean into the more fantastic tone of the LEGO universe, subverting the racing genre in every way possible.
The game still feels surprising, and it seems that the new challenges provide creative new incentives for players to build, too. It’s a shame that monetization plays such a large role in LEGO 2K Drive, because the gameplay’s fresh content is generally exciting.
