Nintendo has just released a new trailer for Mario Strikers: Battle League, which teases some of the potential gameplay mechanics and abilities.

Here’s the official tweet, which has the new trailer and announces when players can jump in:

Football/soccer is one of the most popular international sports, giving Mario Strikers: Battle League enormous potential, and members of Nintendo Switch Online can try out the tutorial beginning today.

Although the promo is just a cinematic, it actually reveals a lot of gameplay mechanics that fans might expect. It might be brief, but there’s a lot to break down here.

Gameplay characters and hints

The new trailer shows two completely different worlds colliding to create a stadium, where Bowser’s team and Mario’s team will face off.

While the footage begins with basic passing, the abilities of each team quickly escalate, proving how this game will distinguish itself from other Mario sports games. It’s really beginning to resemble Rocket League with a Mario twist.

If players touch the walls of the stadium, they’ll apparently be electrocuted. That will definitely shake up the game, since it may also be possible to tackle opponents.

Next, viewers are treated to a giant Bob-Omb, which should also stun opponents. But there are also more character-specific strategies.

At least Donkey Kong can be struck by his own teammates in order to get a boost forward, as well as spiking the ball as in volleyball.

Meanwhile, Bowser is shown lighting the ball on fire, which probably adds force and deals damage. And Mario can fly into the air for a backflip kick, along with some signature voice lines that are fun to hear.

Nintendo is clearly going to have a hit on their hands, because the Mario IP has always succeeded in the sports genre. But there’s some creative twists here that should allow even more strategy than the grounded titles preceding it.
