Max Payne 1 and 2 to be Remade by Original Creators

Max Payne 1 and 2 to be remade for the next generation of systems using Remedy's Northlight game engine.
Maxpayne Remake Coming

Great news for fans of Max Payne, the original gritty vigilante shooter; Rockstar Games has announced that both the original Max Payne and the sequel, Max Payne 2, are to be remade for next-gen consoles.

For those who don’t know, Max Payne is a half crime noir, half third-person shooter video game series developed by Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Studios. The titular protagonist, Max Payne, is a New York City cop turned vigilante after his family’s tragic murder. With the original game coming out in 2001, seeing the game completely redone for modern systems is sure to be something of a shock for the game’s original fans.

Not only is the game receiving a complete remake, but the original studios behind Max Payne will be in charge of bringing the game to the next generation of consoles. That’s right, Remedy Entertainment will be completely in charge of developing the remake, meaning that it’s sure to be faithful to the original experience they released way back in 2001.

According to the development agreement, which was signed today, both games will be developed as a single title for the PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Remedy will be using its proprietary Northlight game engine to develop the game. While Rockstar won’t be involved in the actual development side of the game, they will be funding the development with a budget typical to other AAA games developed by Remedy studios.

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar. “We are massive fans of the work Remedy has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play the new versions.” This seems to suggest a friendly and cooperative atmosphere between the two companies, meaning that the remake’s development is sure to go smoothly.
