In a recent financial report, Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala announced that the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes have entered a “proof-of-concept” stage. The development team has effectively demonstrated the key aspects that define the Max Payne series, adapting the games for modern consoles and PCs.
Max Payne 1&2 remake has progressed well and during the first quarter the project moved into the proof-of-concept stage. The development team has worked efficiently in proving the key elements of what Max Payne is all about and in bringing the game in high quality to today’s consoles and PCs. We expect the project to keep advancing well and with that, the team size will expand gradually towards year-end.
In a previous press release, Remedy Entertainment confirmed a new development agreement with Rockstar Games to remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne video games. The partnership between Remedy and Rockstar Games has a long history, dating back to the original release of the critically acclaimed Max Payne series, which were developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar Games. The games are celebrated for their neo-noir atmosphere, innovative storytelling, and “bullet-time” gunplay.
Rockstar Games Founder Sam Houser expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, saying, “We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala also shared his excitement for the project, noting that Max Payne holds a special place in the hearts of Remedy staff and millions of fans worldwide. He stated, “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action, and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”
As part of the development agreement, Remedy will develop the remakes as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight game engine. Rockstar Games will finance the development budget, which is expected to be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production. After Rockstar Games recoups its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game, Remedy will have the opportunity to earn royalties on the remakes.
