Minecraft‘s latest snapshot, 23w18a, for version 1.20, introduces a new advancement, updates to telemetry, and a fix for an 11-year-old bug, providing players with an improved gaming experience. The new advancement, “The Power of Books,” challenges players to read the power signal of a chiseled bookshelf using a comparator.

Snapshot 23w18a brings several notable changes, including an update to the Smithing Table, which no longer requires a Smithing Template in the template slot before placing an item stack into the other slots. Additionally, the Jukebox has been moved to the Redstone Blocks creative tab. Walking on a block will now always play a step sound, even when walking along the edge of a block with air or fluid beside it. Furthermore, walking on the ocean floor will produce a step sound at a lower volume and pitch.

The data pack version has been updated to 15 to account for sign data format, item display orientation, and advancement changes. Advancement trigger changes include the addition of recipe_crafted and changes to the format of placed_block, item_used_on_block, and allay_drop_item_on_block triggers. Loot table condition/predicate changes feature the renaming of alternative to any_of, the addition of all_of, and updates to telemetry.

In the new snapshot, advancement triggers have been consolidated into a single location field. The new location field is similar to the player field and is a list of loot conditions/predicates. All conditions in this list must match for a trigger to run. Conditions are evaluated in a new loot context called advancement_location, which has access to the player as this entity, the position of the placed block, the block state of the placed/interacted block, and the held/used item as “tool.”

Loot condition alternative has been renamed to any_of, and a new loot condition all_of has been added, which passes only when all sub-conditions pass. The snapshot also includes a new global property sent with every event, a new property in the required WorldLoaded event, and two new opt-in events. The updated required events aim to troubleshoot launcher bugs more efficiently and understand how Java Realms content is interacted with. The updated optional events will inform game design decisions and track and improve game load speeds.

Snapshot 23w18a addresses numerous bug fixes, including MC-1133, MC-48923, MC-257269, MC-261417, MC-261952, MC-262003, MC-262067, MC-262069, MC-262104, MC-262123, MC-262133, and MC-262218. These fixes tackle issues related to block effects, jump boost potion effects, sculk sensor detection, hitboxes, clocks, bundle tooltips, sniffer digging particles, rendering, advancement titles, lag spikes, and block light updates.
