Mojang Studios has once again celebrated April Fools’ Day in classic Minecraft fashion with a really cool new update. This time, the joke update is centered around a random item: the potato. This joke presents itself as a full-fledged expansion, promising sweeping changes, new features, and a whole dimension dedicated to the humble spud. What’s weird is that it’s a real update you can find on the Minecraft Store.
The Poisonous Potato Update has a whole sack (hehe) of interesting additions. Players can supposedly explore the Poisonous Potato Dimension, venturing through biomes like “Hash” and “Arboretum.” The update promises new blocks rich in vitamins and minerals (notably lacking new minerals). The marketplace page actually shows everything promised. There are new gadgets, a reworked fletching table, and a host of poisonous potato mobs. The changelog in the update even includes a nonsensical description of technical improvements for those who enjoy a bit of technobabble.
Minecraft’s Java Edition players can even try this gag firsthand by installing a special April Fools’ Day snapshot. Naturally, it’s recommended to back up your existing worlds beforehand. This newest update seems like it could ruin a saved game with its quick spread. What’s nice is that Bedrock Edition players are included, too, so everyone can try.
The update description is packed with tongue-in-cheek humor, acknowledging the absurdity of the entire concept. The FAQ section playfully addresses that no one likely asked for this and assures players that more carb-based updates are in development like Radioactive Rice and Toxic Taro.
While the Poisonous Potato Update is clearly intended as an elaborate April Fools’ Day prank, it’s interesting to see how far they all went. Minecraft is well-known among the community for small and almost insignificant updates. Usually, one new mob or a different colored item gets added over time. Yet, this is a whole expansion’s worth of stuff. As seen in the Twitter comments, players aren’t happy to see all this effort go into a joke, but not the real game. It’s all pretty cool to see either way.
