The Minecraft movie, featuring Jason Momoa in the lead role, is now set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025, as reported by Deadline. The film’s journey to the big screen has been fraught with difficulties and delays over the years.

In February 2014, a Kickstarter campaign for a fan film was shut down by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, who denied the filmmakers the Minecraft license. However, Persson revealed that Mojang was in discussions with Warner Bros. Pictures for an official Minecraft film, with producers Roy Lee and Jill Messick involved. Shawn Levy was initially tapped to direct, with Kieran and Michele Mulroney writing the script, but all three dropped out by December.

Warner Bros. then hired Rob McElhenney to direct in July 2015, and McElhenney’s interest in the film stemmed from Minecraft’s open-world nature. The studio initially agreed with his vision and granted a preliminary $150 million budget. Production started in 2016, with a release date set for May 24, 2019. Jason Fuchs was brought on as a writer, and Steve Carell signed on to star. However, McElhenney’s version of the film eventually lost momentum, and due to scheduling conflicts, he left the project in August 2018. Aaron and Adam Nee replaced Fuchs, which led to a delayed release date.

In January 2019, Peter Sollett was announced as the writer and director, with a new story separate from McElhenney’s version. Allison Schroeder was later hired to co-write the script with Sollett. The film was initially scheduled for a March 4, 2022 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic led Warner Bros. to remove it from their release schedule in October 2020. Sollett went on to direct Metal Lords, a Netflix exclusive released in April 2022.

Recently, the Minecraft movie resumed production without Sollett and Schroeder, with Jared Hess set to direct and Jason Momoa in talks to star. The film is confirmed to be a live-action adaptation, with Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer reportedly rewriting the script.

Unfortunately, there’s not many details on what exactly the movie will be about, However, now that it has a release date, hopefully information about the film will be revealed in the near future.
