Minecraft, the long-running sandbox crafting and exploration game from developer and publisher Mojang Studios, will officially roll out a major DLC crossover with Dungeons & Dragons. This won’t just include cosmetics, but full locations and enemies from Dungeons & Dragons like Icewind Dale or Mimics.

Although a concrete release date was not announced, the Dungeons & Dragons DLC is slated for spring 2023, so it should be expected very soon. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer for the DLC on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel here:

The upcoming blockbuster adaptation Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is already receiving lots of encouraging praise, is sure to bring in more casual fans of fantasy and RPGs. And Minecraft happens to be perfectly suited for this collaboration, so the DLC is almost a guaranteed hit.

Minecraft already encourages players to create their own adventures, companions, and gear by exploring a vast world. Its world is also limited only by imagination, and players have been remarkably creative over the years, at times inventing incredible things like a fully functioning calculator.

There could not be a more ideal foundation for Dungeons & Dragons, and today’s trailer proves that. All of the environments are detailed enough, and the familiar creatures look incredible. The Gelatinous Cubes are conveniently pre-shaped into blocks. This DLC has more potential than most to bridge video games and tabletop experiences properly.

Many video game adaptations have failed to do the Dungeons & Dragons IP justice. The effort simply wasn’t there, mostly relying on IP to gain any goodwill. Despite some great art design now and then, the mechanics and density just haven’t translated very well. To be fair, it is a considerably dense game.

For those who don’t have a dungeon master, or feel intimidated by the long history of the IP, this DLC is going to do wonders for introducing a new generation to Dungeons & Dragons.
