In a surprising announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase, the cherished Monkey Island series will merge with the immersive Sea of Thieves universe, offering a three-part Tall Tale expansion. A collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, “The Legend of Monkey Island” is set to be delivered in monthly episodes, beginning from July 20, enlivening a novel storyline that involves iconic characters from the Monkey Island franchise.

Players can anticipate exciting encounters with characters such as Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine, the ghost captain LeChuck, and Murray the Demonic Talking Skull, among others. The expansion allows players to explore the terrains of both Mêlée Island and Monkey Island, embarking on point-and-click style puzzles adjusted for Sea of Thieves’ first-person perspective, all encapsulated within the Sea of the Damned, enabling an uninterrupted, fresh exploration of the legendary series.

The Legend of Monkey Island has been ingeniously crafted as three free Tall Tales. These narratives are fueled by a captivating question – what would happen if Guybrush and his team landed on the Sea of Thieves? This concept was conceived during the development of the previous Pirates of the Caribbean crossover, A Pirate’s Life, leading to a new dream collaboration with Monkey Island. This expansion transforms the traditionally point-and-click adventure game into a fully immersive experience in the Sea of Thieves world, combining the charm, tone, and whimsy of both franchises.

The expansion’s title, ‘The Legend of Monkey Island’, is imbued with double meanings, referring to both Guybrush’s past adventures and the upcoming Sea of Thieves’ Tall Tale. The story commences during the period following The Curse of Monkey Island when Guybrush and Elaine sail off for their honeymoon. An interesting question is posed: what if their honeymoon destination was the Sea of Thieves?

Players will have the chance to extensively explore Mêlée Island and Monkey Island, traditionally iconic Monkey Island locations that have been transformed into Sea of Thieves settings. This allows players to not just witness these locations as mere backdrops, but truly engage and interact with these memorable places.

The developers hope that the infusion of the classic Monkey Island series into the current Sea of Thieves game will serve as a perfect introduction to Monkey Island for a new generation of players. This crossover is seen as an opportunity for players to discover the iconic Monkey Island world. If they haven’t experienced Monkey Island before, players are encouraged to explore the series, starting from the original games through to the latest entry, Return to Monkey Island.

The collaboration intends to offer an authentic experience that aligns with the original Monkey Island series’ tone and world-building. It is envisioned that the exploration of these new locations will meet the standards set by the classic franchise, enabling players to perceive The Legend of Monkey Island as a seamless part of one interconnected experience.
