Mortal Kombat 1, the highly anticipated fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros., had its extended gameplay showcased at the prestigious Summer Game Fest 2023 event.
As the twelfth major installment in the renowned Mortal Kombat series and a sequel to the critically acclaimed Mortal Kombat 11 released in 2019, Mortal Kombat 1 serves as the second soft reboot in the franchise’s history, following the success of the 2011 Mortal Kombat. This latest iteration presents players with a fresh timeline, featuring several beloved characters embarking on new storylines.
The Summer Game Fest showcase provided fans with an in-depth look at Mortal Kombat 1‘s gameplay through an extended trailer. The footage showcased captivating story mode cinematics, alongside the exhilarating combat mechanics and gruesome Fatalities of iconic characters such as Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kitana, and more.
To provide deeper insights into the gameplay experience, Geoff Keighley invited Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon to discuss the game’s exciting features on stage. Boon shared valuable details about what players can expect from this revitalized Mortal Kombat universe. According to Boon, Mortal Kombat 1 picks up where Mortal Kombat 11 left off after Liu Kang ascended to become a Fire God. In this reborn universe, Liu Kang has forged an entirely new reality, setting the stage for Mortal Kombat 1 and its alternative take on familiar characters.
An exciting feature of Mortal Kombat 1 highlighted by Ed Boon is the introduction of Kameo Fighters. These fighters provide assistance to players during battles, offering a unique dimension to the gameplay. These Kameo characters exist separately from the main roster and can be selected before each fight, allowing players to expand their combat strategies and fighting possibilities. Boon emphasized that the inclusion of Kameos also pays homage to previous Mortal Kombat titles, adding a nostalgic touch to the game.
Mortal Kombat 1 is slated to be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on September 19, 2023.
