The long-awaited feature of cross play is finally set to come to Mortal Kombat 1. This has been confirmed in a live-streamed YouTube video with the developers. This will bring players from PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC together, but Nintendo Switch was notably absent from the mention.
The announcement (Made at 14:45) has left out Nintendo Switch players. This isn’t confirmation that it won’t come, but it’s pretty clear when the other platforms were listed, and the Switch was left out. There are possible reasons why Nintendo would be left out, but a confirmation would be nice.
There are logistical hurdles to consider. Technical limitations are the first thing that comes to mind when considering why the Switch would be left out. The Nintendo Switch was made for Nintendo games, requiring less power than Xbox and PlayStation games. That limitation may make it hard to add Nintendo to the battle.
Another reason would be that Nintendo may want to give less to Mortal Kombat. Nintendo has a history of trying to keep games family-friendly, even changing the blood in the original Mortal Kombat to sweat. They may want to keep players from dealing with communities that may troll or be rude.
Until official confirmation arrives, Mortal Kombat 1 fans on Switch can only wait and speculate. Either way, those players who bought it on any other platform get to play together. Arguably, this should have been there at launch, but it’s good that it’s coming now.
