Today’s trailer makes it very clear that some classic relationships will remain intact following a Mortal Kombat universe reboot. All of the familiar imagery that fans have come to know and love, including rivalries and friendships, are on display in today’s trailer.

This should reassure longtime fans that any big changes won’t really compromise the fundamentals. Although recent Mortal Kombat titles have been generally well received, Mortal Kombat 1 feels like tidying up, so the timeline will be able to progress consistently. It’s sort of akin to any comic book universe.

To begin with, the graphics are absolutely stunning. Each character is designed with fine details that take a grounded approach and make it easier than ever for their personality and motivations to come through.

The action itself is very well staged, and just as unapologetically gruesome as fans could possibly hope for. Today’s trailer features bloody finishers that are over the top and capture a sense of brutality, but without feeling too cartoonish, which has sometimes been an issue.

It remains to be seen if the gameplay can live up to the central conflict, but there has been very consistent quality lately. The hype for this trailer is legitimately deserved.
