Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, an upcoming mobile exclusive in the franchise, has officially been scheduled to launch sometime in 2023. Unlike the existing mobile game, which has continued to prove very popular, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is expected to be a team-based RPG with real-time fights.

The title’s new Twitter account hasn’t officially posted anything at this time, but @Nibellion links to the game’s brand-new website in this recent tweet:

The announcement comes shortly after Mortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary, so many fans were hyped up and then left disappointed by the mobile exclusivity. Ed Boon was preparing fans for something big just a couple of weeks ago, following the MK30 celebration:

Most fans were hoping for news about an upcoming sequel in the core franchise, which recently picked itself back up with the latest installments, balancing classic features with solid storytelling.

It’s probably good business to let Mortal Kombat expand its franchise, especially as the Hollywood reboot series plows forward and the Mortal Kombat Legends films continue to receive unanimous praise for their characterization and brutality. There have also been previous RPG elements and unique titles like Shaolin Monks in the series, so it’s hard to say that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught doesn’t have potential.

Mortal Kombat has performed just fine on mobile platforms already, by translating its familiar core game formula. However, that game is more of a casual experience, for taking something bloody on the go. Dedicating a story that can’t be found anywhere else feels more like a tactical incentive.

But the beloved mythology of the franchise is arguably better suited for the main titles. NetherRealm Studios developed Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, but fans quickly noticed that NRS only co-published it, so there’s still opportunities for more information soon.
