MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter from Player First Games, has announced its official launch date: May 28th, 2024. In a recent developer update video titled “MultiVersus—Official Developer Update: The Road to Launch,” Game Director Tony Hyunh revealed several features and improvements scheduled for the game’s full release. It looks like there’s been a lot of work since the game was taken down.

In the video, Hyunh highlighted the significance of player feedback during the beta and said it was being used to improve the full game. The development team has been focused on making several improvements, including the engine itself. They are rebuilding the game using Unreal Engine 5, and that’s expected to bring better visuals and character lighting. Moreover, they are working on a new net code system to ensure smooth online play and overall performance across all platforms.

Those are big deals; rebuilding a game from a new engine is often like remaking it because a lot of assets don’t transfer over. Beyond technical improvements, the update will bring new characters and stages from unexplored Warner Bros. franchises to the existing roster, expanding the variety of playable options and environments. It sounds like we’ll see a lot more options soon.

A new PvE mode will also be introduced, offering a fresh way to play and earn unique rewards for players looking for a break from competitive PvP. I feel that single-player modes are necessary for fighting games, so I’m happy to see that. The recent developer update had some amusing moments. Marvin the Martian briefly interrupted the stream, hinting at a potential future character, which showcased the lighthearted approach of the development team for MultiVersus.

The video said we’d get more updates as it gets closer to release, but it’s hard to imagine any bigger news than a new engine, release date, net code, and expanded roster. They really took out the big announcements in this video.
