MultiVersus, the upcoming Super Smash Brothers-style fighting game has just revealed some promo matches between a couple of pros and the developers themselves, Tony Huynh and Daniel Kraft.

Here’s the full video, which just premiered on YouTube:

MultiVersus is one of many games to take advantage of a full IP library, and channel that strategy as a Super Smash Brothers clone. Although, there’s no shame in that if the game is fun and functional. Peers include Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and those tie-ins with Brawlhalla.

But MultiVersus is going to feature Warner Brothers characters, leaning into a bigger variety for the roster. This includes everything from Looney Tunes to Warner’s biggest DC heroes.

Because the catalog is so massive, there are basically infinite possibilities for future updates to the game, whereas similar games can only go so far.

Game mechanics and reveals

The promotional match-up features the devs playing Superman and Shaggy, battling Wonder Woman and Tom.

Wonder Woman’s ability to rescue teammates with her lasso is a unique touch. The personalities of the showcased characters genuinely come through. There’s a clear ambition for authenticity, including recognizable voice actors and music.

Surprisingly, the first match went to the developers rather than the challengers, NAKAT and VoiD. The two guests enjoyed the teamwork, edge-guarding, and the emphasis on creative combos.

The combat is even more cartoonish and friendly than Super Smash Brothers, with very similar level design and mechanics.

Some of the stages include Themyscira and the Bat Cave. These stages feel less interactive and detailed, but small touches like Porky the Pig announcing “that’s all folks” for the end of a match is sure to draw some nostalgic grins.

In fact, the entire game appears to be driven by fan service, but the solid mechanics suggest this game is more than a cash-grab.

Tony revealed that the closed alpha is scheduled for May 19th, and players can sign up for a chance to participate before the game comes out sometime later this year.
