The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the upcoming story-driven adventure from Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon, has just released a new trailer featuring GeForce RTX footage. The game will include NVIDIA DLSS 3 and ray tracing, which are highly desired technological enhancements for visual performance.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is slated to launch on May 25th, 2023. It will be available on PC, as well as current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. A Nintendo Switch port is still expected later on, but it doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet.

NVIDIA’s powerful, AI-driven DLSS and ray tracing features were a highlight at January’s CES 2023, where selected titles that supported NVIDIA’s tech were a big deal. There’s no question that the environments, lighting, and effects in today’s trailer are certainly benefiting. There are nuanced shades, and the textures of the foliage and structures feel much more tactile.

Unfortunately, it also feels a bit like the characters themselves have suffered. Their animation already seemed a bit stiff. The faces and expressions continue to struggle. RTX has highlighted some of the flaws in the game, which were likely a result of the budget.

The devs have been teasing a lot of closed environments, meticulously crafting an experience that feels rather claustrophobic and oppressive, which is fair for Gollum’s life. But it does mean there is less of Tolkien’s beautiful world on display. This even goes for the extended gameplay reveal from last month.

The general art design in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been divisive, but if ever there was a universe that deserved the best visual performance possible, it is Tolkien’s. Hopefully, there will be more to discover, but it does seem like narrative plays the largest role in this game.
