The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, a story-driven deckbuilding adventure from developer Deconstructeam and publisher Devolver Digital, has just released a brief overview trailer for its Tarot Card construction and customization.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to launch “later this year” according to the new trailer description. It will be available on PC and the Nintendo Switch. You can watch today’s overview trailer on the Devolver Digital YouTube channel:

The gameplay revealed today showcases a surprising amount of freedom within the Tarot Cards, which are a central mechanic of The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. In turn, this should give players an equal share of narrative freedom, which is a very clever approach and quite ambitious for an indie.

The Tarot Card construction mechanic itself seems fairly simple, though flexible enough for players to generate all manner of effects. It’s broken down into three steps of summoning a sphere, channeling Arcana, then adding Energy Symbols for magical effects.

But the design process allows you to meticulously adjust, reposition, duplicate and more. The results will have actual meaning, which is sure to reward players that spend a long time on each card. It will also add more investment in your deck, and create a better sense that you are truly guiding the narrative. Fortunately, there seem to be plenty of provided images to experiment with.

Deckbuilders, particularly with roguelike elements, are a busy scene these days. It’s neat to see devs that can completely transform the context of the genre by fusing some inspired spins on Tarot reading with a compelling story. It would’ve been nice to learn a little more about just how to influence card effects, but discovering strategies is probably part of the experience.
