In a new message to the fans today, developer Naughty Dog reflected on The Last of Us, and revealed more on the future of the franchise. Blending adventure, survival and horror, The Last of Us remains one of the most influential and successful franchises in the industry. It will celebrate its 10th anniversary next June. A tweet from Naughty Dog’s feed leads to the developer’s lengthy new message:
The Last of Us is one of those rare AAA titles that’s filled to the brim with the innovation, storytelling, and personality of an indie game. That’s largely due to the narrative, which surprised fans of the genre with characters that were compelling enough to naturally raise the emotional stakes.
The Last of Us first launched in 2013, and it’s seen both a remaster and a remake. It’s going to get a TV series very soon, and Naughty Dog even announced a board game adaptation last November. Today’s message to the fans included a lot of thanks, but also some hints about what to expect next.
Firstly, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann teased that “later this year” fans can expect to learn more details about their upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game. It’s intended to take the series in a new direction, without losing successful elements from the existing story.
Another piece of concept art was shared in today’s message, too. The image includes a massive shipwreck, which looks detailed and staggering enough to meet any expectations.
Druckmann did mention the upcoming PC remake port, but they didn’t clarify when fans could expect to hear more about the features and specs.
Lastly, Druckmann revealed that Naughty Dog will elaborate on their process for the original game, remake, and television adaptation, as the TV series unfolds.
