The NBA 2K franchise recently teased their next cover athlete, and now it’s confirmed that Michael Jordan will be returning for the new installment. Both a Michael Jordan Edition and Championship Edition will be available for pre-orders beginning July 7th, 2022.

Here’s the official reveal from NBA 2K’s Twitter feed, with the slogan “greatness is calling”:

The Last Dance documentary about Michael Jordan’s experiences on the Chicago Bulls renewed a lot of interest in the star athlete, who continues to be an inspiration that transcends sports.

This is Michael Jordan’s fourth time being featured on an NBA 2K cover, so some fans have complained about the redundancy. But Jordan’s iconic jersey number 23 makes him a perfect and even inevitable fit for the next NBA 2K game.

The short teaser that accompanies the announcement features some live-action footage of Michael Jordan highlights.

Out of respect and admiration for Michael Jordan, NBA 2K is adding a new premium Championship Edition. However, this simply includes a 12-month subscription for the NBA League Pass. Select regions will have the chance to grab a physical copy while supplies last, and pre-ordering guarantees you a copy.

Fortunately, the game will include the Jordan Challenge, where players must attempt to recreate fifteen of the athlete’s most iconic moments. These were chosen from Jordan’s plays in college, the NBA, and for Team USA.

Surprisingly, the challenges will also include video vignettes that feature various sports personalities, including some of Jordan’s own teammates. While these guests haven’t been revealed just yet, the details are expected to release sometime this summer.

These features are a great way to celebrate Michael Jordan, and they’ll provide even more insight into his process and history. The two covers that have been revealed are simple but effective, where a signed jersey represents the Championship Edition.
