There are countless management simulators available that allow players to live out a historic period of their own making, with 2019’s Anno 1800 being a clear example. Now, a new funding document from the German government shows Blue Byte, the developer behind Anno 1800, is working on a new game that one German source is calling the next Anno title.

The news was first reported by the German gaming website Games Wirtschaft, which shared a screenshot of a funding listing from the government to Blue Byte. The translation along with the posting says, “How do I announce a new Anno without announcing a new Anno?” but this is just speculation so far.

That being said, the listing does hint at some mechanics in Anno, like deciding the course of a society in a 3D world, but this could just as easily be applied to most strategy simulator games. The main factor for this being a new Anno game seems to be that it’s coming from the developer of the last title.

It’s been four years since the launch of the last Anno title, so it makes sense that a new one could be in development. Ubisoft has continued to support Anno 1800 as recently as the beginning of this year when the title received a current-gen console launch.

Since this news comes from a funding document and not an official Ubisoft source, this is just a rumor that only confirms that Blue Byte has a title in development.
