Pokémon’s official Twitter account has just announced that an all-new Pokémon Presents is scheduled to celebrate this year’s Pokémon Day, featuring “about twenty minutes” of news. Pokémon Day 2023 is recognized on February 27th, and the Presents showcase will premiere at 6 AM pacific time on the official Pokémon YouTube channel:
The teaser accompanying the announcement was pretty cute, featuring a variety of Gen 1 Pokémon and their classic music, which is peak nostalgia for pretty much anyone. However, beyond the straightforward release time, no other details have been revealed.
The Pokémon franchise is undergoing a lot of changes lately, across all mediums. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have been rather divisive, largely for its technical issues and unsatisfying story. The school does feel like a chore, the dialogue is stiff, and the “villains” are hardly interesting.
However, the new gen’s mechanics are all conceptually great, blending elements of Arceus and traditional games, while adding cooperative exploration for the very first time. There were also more than a few fun additions to the dex, including instant fan favorites like Lechonk.
Meanwhile, the Pokémon anime announced a new series last December, which would finally set aside Ash and Pikachu for brand-new characters in the Paldea region.
Hopefully, the new Pokémon Presents will shed some light on their plans for the future of the series, including spotlights on the new protagonists and world. It’ll be an uphill battle to convince fans to try out anything without the beloved original duo.
There should also be some updates on franchise staples Pokémon Go and Pokémon Unite, as well as the trading card game’s foray into Scarlet and Violet. There have been a lot of tournaments lately, for each of the major games.
