The June 2023 Nintendo Direct was packed with brand-new titles that many players didn’t see coming, including a variety of news from the Mario franchise, including a new game for Princess Peach. However, that wasn’t the only new Mario game announced as the developer closed out the showcase with the mind-bending Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
This new 2D sidescroller is the newest entry into the classic Super Mario Bros. franchise that started the gaming plumber craze. This title looks to be taking advantage of the innovations available in the current gen, mixing up the standard levels from this specific series in a big way. Through the use of “Wonder Flowers,” players will be able to change up the level and cause changes to the placement and layout.
In the clip, a lot of strange things can be seen happening like the pipes and other parts of the level collapsing and the pipes coming alive like worms. The effects of the Wonder Flowers do seem truly unpredictable, even if they’re likely scripted events per level. One of the more impressive examples shows Mario riding on a horde of beasts as they ram the flag and knock it down.
The game looks like a lot of fun and seems to feature the same whimsy of past titles thanks to the talking flowers that may work as some kind of guide in this game. Many players also noticed that Daisy was a playable character in this title, which is a first for this series.
