The sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was already confirmed by Activision earlier this year. Much has been shared about the title since, including numerous leaks, as well as the release of Warzone II. While we haven’t seen the game in action, plenty of details have been making the rounds across the web.
This time, though, it is Activision who has shared with us a snippet of information about the next mainline entry. In the publisher’s latest earnings report, they reiterated that the next Call of Duty is a sequel to Modern Warfare and assured that it will be released this year. This also includes the follow-up to Warzone, which should also be released at some point in 2022.

Speaking of the Modern Warfare sequel, Activision touted it as the “most advanced experience in franchise history,” and the development has been progressing well without major hiccups. Meanwhile, the Warzone experience is set to be built from the ground up, “featuring groundbreaking innovations.” The full quote on Warzone and Modern Warfare reads:
“Development on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences, led by Infinity Ward, is proceeding very well. This year’s Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, and will be the most advanced experience in franchise history. The new free-to-play Warzone experience, which is built from the ground-up alongside the premium game, features groundbreaking innovations to be revealed later this year.”
If we go by recent leaks, the reveal of both of these experiences is imminent. A playtest event is planned with select streams, influencers, and content creators getting early hands-on with the game.
However, Activision has yet to share any official word on this. The developer “went dark” by changing their social media headers. The integration of Warzone and Modern Warfare is also said to go smoother than the previous two, Black Ops: Cold War and Vanguard, as the publisher openly acknowledged the previous few lackluster updates.
Infinity Wards’ Modern Warfare 2019 was a slight reboot and was praised highly for its tone, gameplay, and sound design. The sequel is said to be more gritty, brutal, and realistic. There isn’t long until we can see for ourselves how far Infinity Ward has progressed since Modern Warfare 2019. Until then, you can revisit Warzone for the latest season that is adding Godzilla and King Kong.
