Niantic is the famous company behind games like Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. The developer cornered the market using their AR technology to merge players’ favorite franchises with real life. Now, the developer is hard at work on a new social platform that uses some of the same technology to merge the digital with real life.
The app is set to begin rolling out for certain users who already play Niantic’s other games. The app has already begun beta testing using Ingress Agents and will begin to roll out to players of Pokemon GO sometime this summer. The app will allow players of Niantic’s games to find and interact with each other using a variety of social features.
When the player uses Campfire, they’ll see a living map that shows the different game experiences and activities in specific locations near you. Players who prefer specific games will have the option to filter their map view to show the specific icons for each game. Some of the key features that Niantic has listed include:
- Find nearby communities – Players will be able to use the discover page to join new communities, coordinate events, and meet new players who are interested in the same games.
- Niantic friends – Players will be able to add friends using their Niantic accounts regardless of which game they play.
- Direct and group messaging – Players will be able to communicate with each other one-on-one or in large group chatrooms.
- Real-world events – Players will be able to see and engage with real-time events happening in their community, such as gyms and raids in Pokemon GO.
It’s Niantic’s stated goal that it wants to help players of its games connect with each other. Players who are traveling will be able to meet new communities and engage with them using the Campfire app. With the app becoming available to some this summer, it likely won’t be long before the app becomes accessible to the public.
