FaZe Clan co-owner and Twitch streamer NICKMERCS found himself in hot water after a recent tweet, which led to the developers of Call of Duty taking the step of removing his recently launched Operator Bundle from their store.

On June 7, NICKMERCS, took to Twitter to respond to a video capturing a large-scale altercation outside a Glendale, California school. The brawl was reportedly instigated by a school board meeting that was discussing the recognition of Pride Month on campus. The motion was later unanimously approved on the same day, as reported by the LA Times.

The crux of NICKMERCS’s tweet was a contention that LGBTQ+ topics should not be introduced in the educational sphere. He stated, “They should leave little children alone. That’s the real issue.”

Within a day, NICKMERCS addressed the controversy during a live stream. He clarified his stance, arguing that schools and teachers were not the appropriate platforms for such discussions. He stated, “I just don’t think it’s any place for a teacher or a school — I don’t think it’s the place to speak about things like that. It’s not that I think it shouldn’t be spoken about. If that’s what you got from that tweet, then you’re just wrong.”

In response to the situation, Activision, the developer of Call of Duty, decided to pull the NICKMERCS Operator bundle from the Modern Warfare II and Warzone store. The decision was announced on the official Twitter account with the post: “Due to recent events, we have removed the “NICKMERCS Operator” bundle from the Modern Warfare II and Warzone store. We are focused on celebrating PRIDE with our employees and our community.”

It is unclear whether Activision will reinstate the bundle in the future, or if NICKMERCS will add any further comments to his recent comments. As the gaming community continues to evolve and become more inclusive, today’s events shine a bright light on the need for more dialogue and understanding on LGBTQ+ issues.
