Fire Emblem is one of the most successful and lasting tactical RPGs in the genre. Since it’s been around since the 90’s, it was smart of the Emblem trailer to briefly explain some backstory. The cinematic showed off some impressive visuals, leading into some promising footage of actual gameplay.

Fans got a sneak peek at some of the combat, mechanics and characters in the second half of the trailer. It’s surprising how much Fire Emblem was willing to retain its classic gameplay and art design. It won’t invite any newcomers to the genre, but it will definitely satisfy longtime fans and purists. Much of it looks familiar, delivering all of the same beloved features with a new story.

There are also some glimpses of interesting exploration and dialogue between the key battles. This is the most accessibility for newer players to try out the genre. But frankly, Fire Emblem already excels in it, and has no real incentive to do anything more.

Many fans immediately responded to the new trailer with incredible praise for the modern approach to animation and the familiar faces. Some of the Fire Emblem sequels have been hit or miss, and the series lost interest with some of the more recent installments.

However, Engage looks like a tremendous return to form, successfully blending current gaming habits with the series’ traditional feel. The only thing that got a lot of backlash was the look of the protagonist, and that’s hardly the most crucial element of Fire Emblem.
