Nintendo has declared that it won’t be participating in Gamescom 2024. Gamescom, which takes place yearly in Cologne, Germany, is the biggest gaming convention globally. It’s not surprising, as the biggest platform developers have been focused on making their own conferences and showcases. This came as two confirmations to two different publications.
A representative from Nintendo UK told Eurogamer that Nintendo won’t be attending Gamescom 2024. They said this in an official statement.
“Gamescom is a great event, and each year we evaluate whether Nintendo should participate or not,” a Nintendo UK spokesperson told Eurogamer. “After careful consideration from all perspectives, we’ve made the decision not to be present at gamescom 2024. Players will have opportunities to try out Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.”

They also confirmed they wouldn’t come to Gamescom in a statement to Games Wirtschaft.
“Gamescom is a central event in Nintendo’s event calendar. This year, however, after careful consideration, we decided against taking part in Cologne. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events.”
Nintendo Statement
The decision to skip Gamescom 2024 comes after ongoing rumors about a potential successor to the Nintendo Switch, often referred to as the Switch 2. Sources suggest that the new console may not launch until 2025. This revised timeline could be a major factor in Nintendo’s decision. Gamescom has traditionally been a platform for major game reveals and announcements.
Last year, reports suggested that Nintendo might have been showing off the capabilities of the rumored Switch 2 to third-party developers during Gamescom 2023, even though the company hasn’t confirmed the console’s existence. This would be a big reason the company doesn’t want to do it again this year.
Not attending this year would also make us assume that the Switch 2 isn’t coming soon. However, that sounds like something Nintendo would rather do in its own showcase because then it wouldn’t have to share the spotlight and could do it its way. It seems silly now to think Nintendo would give the spotlight to another convention when it can do it itself.
