The developer behind Alan Wake 2, Remedy, has announced that the much-anticipated sequel will forego a physical release. Instead, the game will be available exclusively for digital download. This decision reflects several contemporary factors influencing the gaming industry.
Primarily, the gaming industry has seen a significant shift towards digital-only purchases in recent years. Sony and Microsoft, two giants in the industry, have released their latest consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S, with disc-less versions. As such, it is increasingly common for modern games to be released in digital format only.
Additionally, Remedy has cited cost considerations as another motive behind the decision. By not releasing a physical disc, the company is able to maintain a retail price of $59.99 / €59.99 for the console versions, while offering the PC version at a more affordable $49.99 / €49.99.
Furthermore, the developer emphasized the importance of a smooth player experience. Shipping a disc that would require a subsequent download for the actual game would not meet the high standards of user experience that Remedy aims to provide.
As for the game itself, Alan Wake 2 thrusts players into a thrilling narrative, involving FBI profiler Saga Anderson and beleaguered writer Alan Wake. As Anderson investigates a series of ritualistic murders in Bright Falls, she discovers the grim pages of a horror story that begins to manifest in reality. Simultaneously, Wake is trapped in a nightmarish realm, striving to shape reality through a dark story while evading an unstoppable horror. This twisted tale connects the two characters in an enigmatic way, with echoes becoming reflections across different realities.
Although Alan Wake 2 is a sequel, Remedy has designed the game to be accessible as a stand-alone experience. This means that newcomers can enjoy the game without prior knowledge of its predecessor. However, returning fans will discover abundant lore and connections from the first game.
While the game is set in the same universe as Control and its AWE expansion, playing these is not required to understand Alan Wake 2. However, fans keen on immersing themselves further in the Alan Wake universe may find them worthwhile, though they are optional.
Alan Wake 2 will be available in two editions: the Standard Edition, which includes the base game, and the Deluxe Edition, which adds an Expansion Pass, two shotgun skins, two costumes, and a charm. Pre-orders for either edition come with bonus content.
The game is set to launch globally on October 17, 2023. It will be available for digital download on the Epic Games Store for PC, and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
