Naturally, Wuthering Waves has drawn a lot of comparisons to Genshin Impact, and they are certainly justified. There are many similarities between the titles, even after such an in-depth gameplay reveal. Wuthering Waves feels just as vast and rich in history.
However, the visual and thematic tone is just a little less kid-friendly. It doesn’t seem quite as bubbly, and the color schemes are a little colder, reflecting the post-apocalyptic premise. Also, the combat system is an absolute standout, and definitely has more variety.
There is a fascinating complexity and smoothness to the fighting in Wuthering Waves that gives it a real edge to distinguish itself. Today’s trailer also showcases just how unique each character will be. Weapons and abilities each seem to create a totally different flow, both visually and mechanically.
It looks very satisfying, and really captures an anime style that some direct IP adaptations haven’t even managed. That’s only reinforced by the cinematic moments, which do not ultimately disrupt the visual appeal of combat. There’s a better sense of freedom for this side of the game, and it’ll be interesting to see how characters evolve over time.
Most of the environments, map traversal, and other exploration mechanics are fairly traditional. But the main plot and fighting system invite something mature and compelling, so hopefully the game will live up to those expectations.
