Overwatch was one of the most popular multiplayer titles in the world for a while after it was released, with Blizzard attempting to recapture that with the launch of Overwatch 2 and the Overwatch League. However, Blizzard has now put out a statement that claims that teams who are unwilling to support the upcoming OWL agreement are eligible for a $6 million payout.

The news was shared by the known website BusinessWire‘s reporting on Acti-Blizzard’s financial report. One user shared a screenshot of the mentioned part of the statement on Twitter below.

In it, Blizzard makes clear that the OWL is not a major priority as it “comprise(s) less than 1% of our consolidated net revenues.” As such, those who disagree with the upcoming arrangements will be eligible for a one-time cancellation fee per “team entity.”

The Overwatch League has been going since 2017 when it was founded, going on to host countless competitions in the hopes of engaging with players inside the game. While the league has had its ups and downs, many players are still fans and it will be interesting to see how they react to this news that Lucky seems to think could be the start of the end for OWL as a whole.

It should be noted that it doesn’t seem like OWL is going to be closing down itself but is making a change that it may expect won’t be popular among fans and players. To get ahead of this, they’re offering teams a chance to take a payout if they want to leave because of it.

We’ll have to wait for this change to be announced before we see if any teams are willing to take the considerable payout.
