People Can Fly (PCF Group S.A.), the Polish studio that made Outriders a few years ago, has announced that it is in strategic discussions with its longtime publisher, Square Enix Limited. It released a report to let everyone know that it needs to speak to Square Enix regarding the scope of Project Gemini and the terms of cooperation or the studio will no longer work on the game.
In an ad hoc report released on November 24, 2023, PCF Group stated that it is “highly probable” that Project Gemini will not be continued on the current commercial terms. The company also said that it is analyzing the impact of the discussions on the development plans for other projects. The document is pretty to the point about the situation.
“… based on the ongoing discussions, the Management Board considers it highly probable that the development of Project Gemini will not be continued by the Group on the current commercial terms.”
People Can Fly report No. 58/2023 to Square Enix
PCF Group did not provide any details on the specific reasons for the discussions or the potential changes to the terms of cooperation. The Company will release separate ad hoc reports to inform the public about the outcome of discussions regarding Project Gemini and any potential changes to the development plans for other projects.
Not much has been revealed about Project Gemini, but they’ve worked with Square Enix on how Outriders, so there might be some issues there already we don’t know about. We saw Outriders release to huge acclaim only to die out soon after. In that case, People Can Fly never got any royalties for the game, even though they expected some; so they may be apprehensive about Project Gemini.
Since this has something to do with commercial terms, as stated in the report, that means money. Square Enix not only wants to get their investment back but also wants to make money too. People Can Fly likely does not like how things will be distributed, so they’re likely releasing the report to try and get a renegotiation. Threatening to stop working altogether is a big deal, and Square Enix is sure to respond soon.
Whether or not we will hear about the response from Square Enix is still to be decided. However, as stated above, People Can Fly will release a report whatever the outcome.
