Sony’s PlayStation 5 has crossed a major milestone, reaching 50 million units sold to consumers globally as of December 2023. This accomplishment comes just three years after the console’s November 2020 launch of PS5, which is incredible considering the chip shortage.
This was a year of strong momentum, fueled by a slew of critically acclaimed games. Baldur’s Gate 3, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and more were definitely some of the top games to come out. According to a press release from PlayStation, this holiday season marks the first since launch where Sony boasts a full supply of PS5s, ready to meet the enthusiastic demand.
Despite Microsoft’s pushes to buy Activision and Bethesda and pushing Game Pass, Sony hasn’t lost any ground in the console market. Back in September, the number of Xbox Series X|S consoles was at 21 million. This means that Sony is likely beating Microsoft two to one.
Sony did a great job outdoing Microsoft during the PS4 and Xbox One era, but it looks like the momentum has yet to stop. Microsoft is a much richer company, boasting billions at its disposal, but Sony has made smarter decisions with their money. Their work on paying for timed exclusives and buying smaller development studios that do well is a testament to this. Destiny 2 has its problems, but Sony is letting Bungie handle things before they take over.
It’s hard to see Microsoft make up for lost ground, but anything can happen. For now, Sony is enjoying a victory lap for this generation.
