PlayStation decided to release an extensive unboxing video today, featuring their upcoming PS VR2 console packaging and contents. The video also included some clear instructions on how to actually use each of the components and then store them.
The PS VR2 is scheduled to roll out on February 22nd, 2023. You can watch the full video on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel here:
This was a straightforward tease from PlayStation, and all the better for it. Instead of aiming to continue building hype, they decided to thoroughly break down everything that’s included and how to use it. That’ll be more helpful for players who aren’t looking for a bunch of reaction videos.
The box itself turned out to be a real highlight. It actually has an insert for storing the console, akin to a tabletop base game box, where each component has a dedicated storage space for convenience.
All of the materials were also more environmentally friendly than expected, including the ties and insert. The insert will encourage players to keep the box rather than simply tossing it, which most gamers probably do. Helping the environment is always going to be a win, and more games are trying to be environmentally active lately.
For example, Ubisoft revealed a plan for environmentally friendly events in their games a couple of months ago. PlayStation’s approach should attract players who actively support these causes, and may even get more fans involved.
Naturally, the packaging art design is very minimalist, like the PS VR2. But running the classic PlayStation symbols all around the box to reinforce a 3D environment is pretty clever.
The PS VR2 features are all distinct improvements over its predecessor, as technology improvements allowed the designers to emphasize comfort. Now that players have a clear look at them, they do seem fairly easy to manage.
