The Pokémon Company has announced today that the long-running anime Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series will end. A new show will follow two completely new protagonists and three Paldean starter Pokémon.
The story of Ash and Pikachu will receive 11 final episodes, which will start airing on January 13th, 2023, in Japan. Here’s the full trailer from Pokémon’s official YouTube channel:
It’s hard to imagine a Pokémon anime without Ash and Pikachu. They’ve been a part of pop culture for generations of fans, and their animated journey has invited so many into the world of anime, manga, trading cards, and video games. Their relationships and adventures have been charming and compelling.
The decision to end their saga shortly follows Ash and Pikachu’s championship achievement, which finally rewarded all of their efforts, and took over the entire internet for a while. It now seems there isn’t enough room left for the characters to grow, even if there is always more to explore and discover.
So, the concluding episodes will likely act as more of an epilogue, tying things off. There’s a lot of pressure on the remaining chapter to end the series properly. Saying goodbye to Ash and Pikachu’s story will be extraordinarily nostalgic, and even genuinely emotional for many fans.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have quickly become a very divisive generation in the hit game series. Fans have mainly drawn complaints over technical issues, such as the graphics and lag. The story is also underwhelming, but the gameplay mechanics themselves can be very satisfying.
After all, it’s the first open world co-op installment, and it borrows various elements from both Arceus and Sword and Shield. Conceptually, adding more freedom in Pokémon is a great idea. While Arceus was set in a time with very few people, mostly composed of landscapes, Paldea offers a lot of new towns for the upcoming anime series.
Hopefully, the writers can do the franchise justice in the Paldean anime series. They have big shoes to fill, and shouldn’t disregard all of the humor, heart, and themes that Ash and Pikachu established for decades of fans.
