Pokémon has officially announced the new documentary series Road to Worlds, about competing for the Pokémon World Championships. It’s set to premiere on June 26th, 2023, and will run through June 29th, 2023. Fans can watch the series on the Pokémon Twitch channel.
According to an official blog posted today, the Road to Worlds series will explore the journey competitors took in order to make it to the 2022 World Championships. The doc will feature “four rising stars from North America, a former World Champion from Europe, and the Judges”. The blog also has an unlisted teaser, which was trimmed down for today’s announcement tweet:
Pokémon has always been a very friendly brand, but the World Championships take an incredible amount of dedication, work, and travel. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the pro scene of competition is actually attainable could be very compelling.
This could also be inspiring and informative for newcomers, who may want to plan ahead for professional pursuits of their own. It would show that entering the championships is actually achievable. It’ll also remove a bit of the mystery that could be discouraging promising competitors. And if the series is honest enough, it could better prepare younger players for realistic obstacles.
Pokémon has been ramping up a lot of marketing though, so the series could turn out to be a simple hype campaign for the 2023 World Championships in Japan.
But earlier this week, Pokémon had to open up a lottery just for guests to shop for merch, which would naturally have exclusive World Championships 2023 products. The tournament doesn’t really need the help, so hopefully, Road to Worlds does take a grounded approach.
