Pokémon Go, the popular AR mobile game from Niantic, has announced that special in-person City Safari events are coming in October 2023, according to a new blog posted today. These events will feature location-themed wild encounters and exclusive special research. It’s a new open format that’ll take players to landmarks and smaller local attractions alike.

On October 7th and 8th, the event will be available for Seoul, South Korea. On October 13th and 14th, City Safari is coming to Barcelona, Spain. Then on November 4th and 5th, the event will arrive in Mexico City, Mexico.
These locations are spread out well, but with only three, it feels somewhat limited right now. Fortunately, a follow-up tweet mentions that players should stay tuned for more locations and dates.
The main premise of the event is about helping Professor Willow and Eevee, so fans who purchase a ticket will encounter a special Eevee wearing an explorer hat when they begin the special research. It’s a simple cosmetic, but adorable and thematic, nonetheless.
A complete list of Pokémon coming to each city has been confirmed on today’s new blog. A few of the highlights are the exclusive introduction of Skiddo, and even Duskull wearing a cempasúchil crown in celebration of Día de los Muertos.
There’s a decent variety, and the nods to local culture definitely had some thought behind them. It’s much appreciated, given how much Niantic has broken trust with the community over Raids.
However, it would’ve been nice if there were even more additions, to better justify the in-person commitment. At least Skiddo is a welcome surprise, and it’s unfortunate that Niantic didn’t confirm when or even if they’d get a worldwide release.
