Pokémon Go, the popular AR game from Niantic, will officially add new in-person Shadow Raids that will allow players to catch Shadow Pokémon on May 22nd, 2023.

The announcement came with a new cinematic trailer, which also revealed that Shadow Mewtwo would be available to battle on May 27th and May 28th, 2023. Pokémon Go is available on iOS and Android devices. You can watch the full Shadow Raids trailer on the Pokémon Go YouTube channel:

It is some terrific fan service that Shadow Mewtwo has tied into the Master Ball, since it feels like a callback to Gen 1, when Mewtwo was the only legendary Pokémon worth saving your Master Ball for. It wasn’t long before far more difficult encounters appeared, such as the elusive Legendary Dogs, who skipped around so much you couldn’t save your game beforehand.

Special Research is available now for players to earn a Master Ball, and the conclusion unlocks on the same day that Shadow Raids will launch. The Master Ball was only just revealed earlier this week.

Shadow Raids would definitely help players earn the candy they need for all of the Shadow Pokémon you meet battling Team Rocket. They are much tougher to catch, and level up. Dedicated areas have a lot of potential, so hopefully the Shadow Raids will include other thematic features.

It would’ve been nice if the trailer actually showed any Shadow Raid features and gameplay, but there is a glimpse of Shadow Mewtwo when you would try to catch them. The pose, animations, and shadow effects look fantastic.

Although there was a lot of controversy surrounding raids in Pokémon Go, the Shadow Raid content itself should be pretty satisfying.
