The Pokémon TCG has just revealed that a new “151” expansion for the Scarlet & Violet set, inspired by the “reinvigorated” region of Kanto, the classic world of Gen 1. According to an official blog post today, the 151 expansion is slated to release on September 22nd, 2023. Here’s the official promo image from the full announcement tweet:

The expansion will feature over 160 new cards, at least 10 Trainer cards, and consistent artwork across evolution chains. There’ll also be 12 more Pokémon EX, including the original starters and even Mew.
The Pokémon TCG is notorious for the volume and breakneck pace of its new expansions, but this nostalgic trip is certain to renew interest. That’s especially true following the global release of Pokémon TCG Live, which may be more convenient for players.
Every single one of the original Kanto Pokémon, including the lovable starters, will be in the expansion. They’ve reappeared before, as in XY, but it’ll be very interesting to see how the cards will be adapted to fit in with the new, extreme attack and HP values.
It would take some extensive work, and they’re even being released in Pokédex order. It proves just how much love there still is for those treasured beginnings. Now that Kanto Pokémon will be able to fit in with legal tourneys and more recent sets, players are certain to invest, and hopefully it introduces newer generations of players to the earliest stars of the 90’s phenomenon.
Today’s blog post also mentions that “a new day dawns in Kanto”, hinting that there may be some interesting changes for familiar faces. It’d be a delight to see how the characters, towns and more could look these days.
