Pokémon TCG Online is officially being phased out as Pokémon TCG Live rolls out its Beta this week. This new version of Pokémon’s online trading card game experience will also be free to play, available on iOS, Android, PC and macOS.
The new update to the online game will support many of the same features, including the ability to scan codes for in-game additions, as well as earning Crystal in-game currency and completing daily quests. The global Beta will allow players to compete against each other, but the update could take “several days” to roll out across all app stores according to an official post.
Although hard copies are fun to collect, admire, and play with friends, the online game was always the easiest way to discover new trainers and really participate with the community. The trading card game is hardly suffering, and continues to successfully expand.
The TCG will surely feel renewed interest after Pokémon’s big Scarlet and Violet launch, which is this Friday. Just last October, the trading card game announced three Paldea-themed collections based on the upcoming new starters. The sets will include oversized cards, a novelty that encourages fans to invest in physical collections.
If you’re already playing Pokémon TCG Online, you might be worried about losing your hard-earned collection. Fortunately, all you need to do is log in to the new site in order to migrate your existing collection data. Both games use the same Pokémon Trainer Club for account services.
For now, there’s no deadline to migrate your account, and no dates have been confirmed for the removal of the TCG Online app or server shutdown. But the update couldn’t be easier, and it’s exciting to see Pokémon acknowledge the wide and loyal fanbase of the TCG.
