It’s a good morning for Pokémon fans, as the TCG has just revealed the first six cards from the upcoming Pokémon Go expansion set.
It’s a tremendous addition to the game, as the cards feel equally practical and collectible for fans of the mobile game. It’s a great gateway for players who don’t play both, to join one or the other!
Here is the tweet from Pokémon TCG’s official Twitter account:
The Tweet is actually missing one of the revealed cards, which turned out to be a Snorlax. It’s a shame to hide it, since both Pikachu and Snorlax feature the most inventive art design. They directly borrow from the Pokémon Go experience, showing the two basic Pokémon interacting with the real world.
As depicted on the card, Snorlax is blocking somebody’s front door, which is both hilarious and on point. As in the first generation of video games, Snorlax has had a long tradition of blocking important paths.
However, it also ties into the card’s ability, which prevents opponents from retreating. As usual, Snorlax is OP, with a single attack as powerful as their HP (though it naturally puts Snorlax to sleep).
Pikachu is another great implementation of Pokémon Go features. Pikachu is shown walking beside somebody on the sidewalk, and the only attack is called “Buddy Bolt”.
Pokémon Go fans will recognize the term “Buddy” as someone who accompanies players as they travel, making it a perfect fit.
Then there’s the PokéStop trainer card. It’s a stadium, which lets you constantly shave off the top three cards from your deck to keep any items you find. This is an interesting way to incorporate how PokéStops actually work.
Even the Blissey card looks like a raid battle, and successfully uses unique overworld imagery. Unfortunately, the V-star cards are more traditional, and seem less interested in capturing the spirit of the mobile game.
