Pokémon Unite, the franchise’s highly successful MOBA title, has just released a brand-new gameplay trailer for the upcoming Urshifu. The spotlight shows off Urshifu’s moves, as well as the unique animations for both martial arts stances. Urshifu will be available on December 1st, 2022. Here’s the full trailer from Pokémon Unite’s YouTube channel:
Naturally, fans know to expect a standard one-week paywall, so Urshifu won’t gain any real traction until December 8th. It’s an unfortunate and common habit for the MOBA genre, in order to both make money and maintain the prized “free-to-play” stamp.
But the melee combat does look pretty solid in today’s trailer, and that was always going to be a key selling point for the martial arts-based Pokémon. The animations capture Urshifu’s skill, speed, and power.
Urshifu is a fairly recent Pokémon, so it may not have quite as many fans as the classics. But Urshifu was still a creative addition to the Pokémon series, introduced for Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor DLC. The ability to pursue two different secondary types, reflected by its martial arts style, was a fun mechanic.
Urshifu successfully harkens back to other classic fighting-types like Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, where players could choose between a kicking or punching specialist.
Pokémon Unite has smartly translated Urshifu’s flexibility into an all-rounder role, which is a perfect fit, even if longtime fans are still hoping for other roles to get more attention.
Naturally, fans also took the opportunity to ask for other Pokémon they’d like to join the game, especially after the highly successful launch of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Many of the Paldean additions to the series are considered pretty satisfying, and they could easily fit into the MOBA mold.
