The development team of Prince of Persia: The Sand of Times Remake has, at last, ended the drought of no news regarding the game. Instead of being developed at Ubisoft Pune, it’ll now be helmed by a veteran Ubisoft studio—Ubisoft Montreal. Founded back in 1997, the Montreal studio has been involved in pretty much all Ubisoft games, even the original Sands of Time.
The Sands of Time remake was initially announced during Ubisoft Forward in September 2020, and was slated for an immediate January release. The visuals of the game in the announcement trailer weren’t the sights that fans of classic games would find pleasant, and it certainly didn’t look like a “remake.” The barely passable visual was received highly negatively, which prompted a delay, and even more delays afterwards.

Two years after the first reveal and a year later from the original intended release date, we have no idea when the game will be released. Neither the current state of the game’s development as Ubisoft continues to be quiet, likely not revealing anything substantial until it is “ready to be shown.”
Unlike all the recent delay announcements, today’s update is a likely a good thing. Handing it to a “more experienced” group can be viewed as Ubisoft being serious about the remake, although this doesn’t guarantee a positive result. The development team posted a message on Twitter announcing the change in the studio, it reads:
“The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal, the very birth place of the epic Sands of Time Trilogy.
This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready.
We want to thank you for your continued support and patience throughout the development. Rest assured, that we will update you on the progress in a future update”
The game is still without a release date, but hopefully we will have updated footage in the coming months as the publisher will likely host their own E3-type showcase, Ubisoft Forward. What could also be announced is the 2.5D Prince of Persia game that is in development, set to be inspired by Ori.
