Developer Remedy Entertainment and publisher 505 games, who launched the original action-adventure Control in 2019, have officially announced they are partnering again for the direct sequel Control 2. No release window has been confirmed just yet, but it will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Here’s the big reveal from Remedy’s Twitter feed:
According to the announcement’s first post, “the project is currently in concept stage”, and the second post adds that “it’ll take a while”. So, unfortunately, fans may not get any kind of release window for a long time. However, the developer and publisher have both continued to emphasize the ambition of the sequel, aiming for another game-changer.
Control was a very compelling story, combined with mindbending visuals, resulting in a kind of Matrix for the gaming industry. There have been countless awards for the game, and pretty much ubiquitous praise from the fans since launch. The Foundation and AWE expansions that followed were also generally well-received.
There’s a unique innovation to Control, which understands the fundamentals of what makes action fun. The worldbuilding drives fresh scenarios with meaning, and the combat itself plays well. This includes both the controls and settings, which were always full of surprise.
Control 2 previously went under the codename Heron, but it’s unclear if that holds any significance. Either way, it’s nice to know that this game in particular will directly follow the previous installment. Despite the deeply ambitious project, Remedy has carefully reassured fans that it will not disrupt any of their plans for the rest of this year.
Today’s announcement came with some concept art for Control 2, which looks absolutely gorgeous and teases a new mystery with the FBC.
